Reviewed by JustCuriosity 10Mommy Dead and Dearest was extremely well-received in its world premiere today at SXSW Film Festival. This film morphs from apparent case of matricide into one of the journey of Gypsy, a severely abused child. Her journey as recounted in recovered VHS tapes and interviews will shock you even if you think you can no longer be shocked by what human beings are capable of. It is best not to give away too many of the details of Gypsy's story. The filmmakers have taken care to present the story with both sympathy and nuance as we learn the disturbing details behind Gypsy's story and most disturbingly how every institution that was supposed to help her – medical, educational, social workers, the criminal justice system – failed to attenuate the abuse and allowed the conditions that produced this bizarre and disturbing situation to continue. The film is scheduled for HBO and this story deserves to be more widely seen and understood. Unfortunately, in so many ways, the criminal escaped punishment and the victim has been imprisoned by what has happened.
The filmmakers have done an excellent job of bringing this troubling story to life for the public. Reviewed by wrdsmth 9Documentaries, when done well, are like great theater. Count 'Mommy Dead and Dearest' among one of the best ever made. It also doesn't hurt that the filmmakers have an unbelievable fascinating story to work with.'
May 14, 2017 Mommy Dead and Dearest Monday on HBO. A version of this article appears in print on, on Page C6 of the New York edition with the headline: A Killing Of Deceptive Appearances. Mommy Dead and Dearest is a documentary film directed by Erin Lee Carr about the murder of Dee Dee Blanchard, for which her daughter, Gypsy Rose Blanchard, and Gypsy's boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, were accused. It debuted on HBO on 16 May, 2017.
Gypsy Rose' sounds like a name for the title character in some form of art. But the story of her life is a tale best left for nightmares.Just when you think that there is nothing else that could horrify or surprise you, along comes a story that turns that on its head.It is going to take me a lifetime to forget what I just watched. I also now have a new added skepticism of or society, legal and justice system- all of which dropped the ball here.Sometimes the worse solution may end up being the only solution.

No disrespect intended but I always shake my head when people gush over Gypsy Rose.Indeed, she was a victim, but the apple didn't fall far from the tree. Her mother Deedee was a monster, however Gypsy Rose's over the top 'cute, wide-eyed and angelic' persona makes me shudder.Every time she speaks, even after the murders, it comes off as a trained sound-byte where she bats her eyelashes and tries to portray some innocent Disney character. It reads as very unnatural and phony.
She's still playing to an audience.Watching her behaviour right after the murders, her comments on camera in the hotel room, her posted comments - make my skin crawl.Like her mother, she's creepy as all hell. Gypsy is clearly some manner of sociopath, or at the very least extremely manipulative. Even in other interviews from prison when asked about whether she feels guilty she basically goes 'Oh I'm sorry (not really) it was really terrible (but she deserved it)' etc etc.Cue tears.
Which are obviously forced. Her mother was human garbage, but Gypsy has a capacity for deceit and callousness that is well documented and obvious. More than that I think people gloss over the fact that all Gypsy had to do was walk into a police station one day and all this shit would have been over before it started. I'm at the point where she's discussing their different online sexual personas.wtf am I watching?I know people are fucked up in many different ways, including the ways that are being shown in this doc. But this is a lot to take in at once.Edit: Yup, you take multiple mentally-challenged people and toss them in a big pot; you get mentally-challenged stew with a side of murder. It makes sense to me now. The family members really cement the whole thing.
None of them seem to be playing with a full deck.
